The New IB DP Science Programs: First Look and first impressions
ELSA Online Event: June 7th 2023 from 5:30 to 6 p.m.
A review of the changes, and their rationale, in the Biology, Chemistry and Physics programmes, first assessment 2025.
Open to ELSA member schools only and free of charge.
This event is targeted at teachers familiar with the current IB diploma programmes in Biology, Chemistry and Physics who wish to get a quick overview at what will be changing as of September 2023. We will be looking at the new ‘roadmap’ format that the IB is using for first assessments in 2025 which allows, with the linking questions, for a non-linear, personalised teaching of the programmes by theme (and by level of organisation in Biology). The IB is leaning towards a more contextual approach which is intended to help students see connections between topics and get the bigger picture. We will also go over what is new concerning the exam papers, internal assessment work (including what kind of teamwork is allowed between students) and the Group 4 Project which is now known as the Collaborative Sciences Project. It is hoped that this spotlight event will provide an opportunity to share impressions and questions about its impact on our teaching.
Alan Damon has taught at the Ecole Jeannine Manuel in Paris since 1993 and taught IB subjects there since 2003 including Biology, ITGS and TOK. He is one of the authors of the Pearson IB Biology SL and HL books and has been writing text books for the IB since 2006.
Mike Ford teaches at the Ecole Jeannine Manuel in Paris. Mike has 30 years IBDP in teaching chemistry, physics and TOK and 20 years working for IB in a range of roles:
